Kentucky Academy of Physician Assistances

Lobby Day

On Wednesday January 28th, members of KAPA's government affairs committee and board of directors hosted a legislator breakfast at Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort to advocate for better access to care and improved healthcare delivery models.

It was a great opportunity to connect with legislators and share how SB 116 can strengthen team-based practice and improve access to care for patients across Kentucky. We were proud to stand alongside supportive physicians, nurse practitioners, and healthcare leaders, and grateful to Senator Madon for championing this important legislation.

Legislative Update

KAPA is excited that Senator Scott Madon is our primary bill sponsor and will be introducing legislation allowing PAs in Kentucky to provide high-quality care with more flexibility and less administrative burden under a collaborative model.

SB 116 will:

  • Modernize PA practice – Change the PA–physician relationship from supervision to collaboration
  • Empower healthcare teams – Allow collaboration agreements to be determined at the practice level based on the PA’s education, training, and experience
  • Expand care – Allow PAs to prescribe Schedule II controlled substances
  • Improve efficiency – Permit PAs to perform Driver’s License vision testing
  • Help provider shortages – Reduce administrative red tape and keep talented PA graduates in Kentucky
  • Expand employment opportunities – By reducing unnecessary administrative barriers

KAPA needs your help to get SB 116 to the finish line! Contact members of the Senate Health Services committee and your legislators today and ask them to SUPPORT SB 116. Let’s modernize PA practice in Kentucky and close the gap in healthcare access for our rural and underserved communities.

Lobbying FAQS & Tips

I’ve scheduled a meeting with my legislator… Now what?

Come to the meeting prepared. You will have only a short time to talk to your legislator because of the many constituents who want to see him or her about issues or problems. Organize your meeting by following the tips below:

  • Take a letter or fact sheet to the meeting to leave with the legislator.
  • Practice in advance. Anticipate answering questions about the issue.
  • Be yourself. Most legislators are good listeners so they want to hear your perspective on the issue.
  • Treat your legislator as you would like to be treated; be respectful and professional.
  • Never threaten or brag on your campaigning or contributions when talking about issues.
  • Thank your legislators for their support, time and serving in public office.
  • Send a thank you card after the meeting.
  • After the meeting, report back to KAPA to let them know how the meeting went.
